Shamal

Another wind that can blow in Kuwait is the shamal (shamal). The sandstorms, which last an average of three to five days, bring huge amounts of desert sand from Jordan and Syria. A sjamal occurs on average once or a few times a year and almost completely stops life in large parts of Iraq and Kuwait. Air traffic is completely shut down, road transport is very difficult and when the shamal reaches the Persian Gulf, fishing and shipping are also virtually impossible. The phenomenon is well visible on satellite photos, where you can see the sandstorms moving over Iraq towards Kuwait and the Persian Gulf.

Rain

Even in the desert it sometimes rains, but that is not often the case. If there is rain in Kuwait, it is in the colder period (November to April). However, the quantities are not great: months when more than 25 mm falls are rare. On an annual basis, the average is between 25 and 175 mm, the differences can be large per year.

In the month of April you see the temperatures rise considerably, both during the day and at night. From June, even the minimum temperature hardly falls below thirty degrees. Daytime temperatures of 43 to 48 degrees are very normal. Under these circumstances, being active in the open air is not recommended. Even a simple walk can be too strenuous during the day. Only in October do you see the temperatures drop and even then it is often hot.

Sun holiday

If you want to celebrate a sun or beach holiday in Kuwait during summer temperatures, it is preferable to do so in November, March or April. It is then warm, but often not too warm. Because these are transition months between summer and winter, there may be days with heavy rain or thunderstorms. Periods of bad weather for days on end are rare in Kuwait.
