Climate of Brunei

Where is the country of Brunei located? The Sultanate of Brunei, usually simply referred to as Brunei, is located on the island of Borneo. The country consists of two parts, of which the western part is fairly flat and the eastern part (Temburong district) more mountainous. This is especially true in the southern half, where in the extreme south you will find the highest point in the country: Bukit Pagon mountain with a height of 1850 meters.

Tropical climate

Brunei has a tropical rainforest climate (type Af according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification), with warmth and a lot of moisture throughout the year. In the Temburong region, there is a transitional climate at the higher locations. These areas do not meet the temperature criteria for the Af climate. According to most sources, this is a humid subtropical climate.

Temperatures

The average daytime temperature in the northern zones of Brunei is between 29 and 33 degrees throughout the year. The months of November, December and January are generally the coolest, from April the warmest days are measured. At night, the temperature in large parts of Brunei rarely falls below 21 degrees Celsius. The average minimum temperature is between 22 and 25 degrees. Further south, temperatures are generally lower. It never actually gets warmer than 37 degrees, these are record temperatures that are occasionally measured locally. Due to the high relative humidity, it can feel warmer than the measured temperature.

Rain

Precipitation in Brunei always falls in the form of rain. Hail, sleet and snow do not occur in Brunei. On average, there is no less than three thousand millimeters of precipitation per year. Brunei does not have really dry periods. There is a lot of rain almost every month, which mainly comes in the form of showers from the sky. Brunei has two monsoon periods: the northeast monsoon is active from December to February, the southwest monsoon from June to October. The total annual precipitation amounts to almost 2900 millimeters on average.

Hurricanes

Borneo is located south of the main supply route for hurricanes that form over the Pacific Ocean. As a result, Brunei never suffers from hurricanes, because they move away from the equator. Other natural disasters such as tidal waves, earthquakes and tsunamis also have little chance of hitting Brunei.

Best time to visit Brunei

Do you want to know when is the best time to travel to Brunei? You can determine the best time to travel to a destination based on the weather and climate. In addition, there are other factors that are not directly related to the weather and that can influence the best travel periods for a travel destination. Think, for example, of holidays or festive periods, which makes traveling more interesting or not, because daily life comes to a standstill as a result. The Sultanate of Brunei is a small country located on the island of Borneo. It has a tropical rainforest climate where the temperatures during the day are almost always around or just above thirty degrees and at night it rarely gets cooler than 23 to 25 degrees. There is quite a lot of precipitation, during which there is no real dry period. On average you can count on 2500 to 3000 millimeters of rain on an annual basis. That is about four times as much as in the Netherlands. The period from February to April is slightly drier, making this the best time to visit Brunei. It is also the period when the sun is most visible. The last quarter of the year is the wettest period in Brunei. Precipitation amounts of 300 to 350 millimeters per month are then quite normal. During extreme rainfall, flooding can occur in Brunei.

To dive

Brunei is a great diving destination. There are several good diving locations, including shipwrecks and reefs. The best time to dive around Brunei is from late February to September. Underwater visibility is then reasonably good. The seawater has a temperature that rises from 27-28 degrees towards 30 degrees Celsius.

Clothing

Brunei is a fairly conservative Islamic country. In the tropical temperatures you would soon be tempted to walk around in shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops. That is fine if you are on the beach or you are in your hotel. As soon as you enter the public life of Brunei, it is better to wear comfortable long clothes, preferably made of cotton or linen. Eating out in shorts or visiting a mosque in short clothes is ‘not done’.
