Saba is a small island in the Caribbean that until recently belonged to the Netherlands Antilles. As of October 10, 2010, it is a Dutch municipality, even though the official language is English. The island’s capital and largest town is The Bottom. On the island of Saba, at 877 metres, you will find the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands: the Landschapsberg, a quiescent volcano. Saba is very popular with Americans for its university that specializes in medicine. These mostly American students make up almost 10 percent of Saba’s population. Saba is almost completely covered with rainforest and is still quite undiscovered by mass tourists; so you can still enjoy the peace here that can no longer be found in most places in the Caribbean.

Tropical monsoon climate

Saba has a tropical monsoon climate, with the wettest period in late summer and autumn. The average annual temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius, but is somewhat weakened by the trade winds that blow here. The higher parts of the island are a bit cooler; you can assume that if you go up 200 meters, the temperature will drop about half a degree. In the evenings the temperature can also drop considerably and you will sometimes need a sweater, partly due to the ever-present trade wind.

The best time to travel to Saba is from January to April. After a somewhat wetter month of May, the months of June and July are good alternatives. July can be a bit windy at times, which can make for spectacular landings on the airport runway. At just 400 meters, this runway is one of the shortest in the world. After July, the chance of stormy conditions increases. That will last until November.

During the first four months of the year, daytime temperatures are between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius. The tropical climate ensures that it hardly cools down during the night. Minimum temperatures of about 22 to 25 degrees are then quite normal. Temperatures rise slightly from April/May. The number of days that it rains is increasing and the average monthly amount of precipitation also increases. Characteristic of the weather on Saba is that a sudden change in the weather is always lurking.

Saba during the school holidays

If you want to visit Saba during a school holiday, the Christmas holidays and spring break are the best travel periods. These are the holidays with the best chance of dry days and the best feeling temperatures.
