Where is the country of Liberia located? The Republic of Liberia is a country on the west coast of Africa. Founded by ex-slaves from the United States, the country has been one of the poorest countries in the world for decades. A striking fact is that many foreign ships sail under the Liberian flag, which is mainly due to the cost-technical aspect. Liberia has a flat landscape along the coastal region, which inland, through a hilly landscape, changes into mountainous areas in the northeast. Liberia’s highest peak is Mount Wuteve, with a height of 1440 meters above sea level. Although Mount Nimba is higher with a height of 1752 meters, this is not considered the highest point in Liberia, because the part of this mountain that is located in Liberia is lower than 1440 meters.

Liberia has a mix of tropical climates, in which the tropical rainforest climate (climate type Af according to the Köppen climate system) dominates along the southeastern coastal areas and in the northwest and inland there is mainly a tropical monsoon climate (type Am). The highest areas have a tropical savanna climate (type Aw).

Rainy season

Liberia has two areas in terms of precipitation. Along the coast there is one long rainy season, which starts at the end of April/beginning of May and lasts until the end of October. The peak in monthly rainfall is in the middle of the rainy season. With an average of 500 to 800 millimeters per month, June, August and September are the wettest months. Inland there are two rainy seasons, because the wet period is interrupted by two months in which there is less rain. The first rainy season here runs from March to early July and the second from late August to October, with September usually being the wettest month.

Tropical warm

Liberia has the tropical warmth that is so characteristic of this region. The temperature during the day is almost constant between 28 and 32 degrees. The coolest moment of the day is just before sunrise, when the thermometers are almost always around 20-22 degrees. In the mountain areas it can get a bit cooler at night due to the differences in height.

Due to the fairly heavy rainy season in Liberia from March/April to about the end of November, the period from December to mid-March is the best time to travel for a holiday in Liberia. Looking at the chance of rain, the months of January and February are the best time to travel to this African country.

Temperatures

The afternoon temperatures can be called tropical all year round. It is warmest in winter. The maximum temperatures are then around 29 to 33 degrees Celsius and in the evening it slowly cools down to reach minimums of about 22 to 26 degrees on the coast and about 17 to 21 degrees deeper inland. March is generally the hottest month, after which temperatures drop while rainfall increases. In summer the maximum temperatures are around 26 to 28 degrees Celsius. These are the coolest months of the year for Liberia.

Rainy season

Within Liberia there is a lot of precipitation. The driest areas need about 1500 to 2000 millimeters of rain per year. The wettest destinations in the country are much wetter. Think of sometimes five to six thousand millimeters of rain per calendar year. About five thousand millimeters of precipitation is normal in the capital Monrovia, with extremely high rainfall in the months of June and July. More than 1000 millimeters of rain can fall in one month. That is more than in the Netherlands in a whole year. The rainy season starts in March or April and lasts until November or December.
