Where is the country of Comoros located? The Union of the Comoros, commonly referred to simply as the Comoros, is a state made up of three islands located east of Mozambique and northwest of Madagascar. Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan have been an independent state since 1975. The fourth island that briefly belonged to the country of the Comoros is Mayotte. A year after independence, the people of Mayotte chose to return as part of France.

The Comoros has a tropical monsoon climate, with the drier period being found at the end of the local winter. Locally, because the criteria for a tropical monsoon climate are not met, there can be a tropical rainforest climate (type Aw according to the Köppen climate system). The summer months are warm (26 to 31 degrees), humid and clammy. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, the seawater around the Comoros is pleasantly warm all year round.

Precipitation

The total amount of precipitation registered on an annual basis is between 2200 and almost 3000 millimeters. Precipitation in the Comoros always falls in the form of rain. Usually there are fierce showers that last a relatively short time. In the wet season the showers can follow each other fairly quickly, making it seem as if it rains for a longer period of time. The period from the end of December to April is by far the wettest period. Precipitation amounts well above three hundred millimeters are no exception during the summer months.

Temperatures

The temperature is fairly constant throughout the year. That is a well-known fact for an area with a tropical climate. On average, the temperatures are slightly below what you normally see in a tropical climate. That has two causes. First of all, there is almost always a cooling wind, secondly there are places locally on the islands where it is cooler due to differences in height. Directly on the coast, temperatures are usually a few degrees higher. The maximum temperature in the Comoros never exceeds 34 degrees Celsius. At night, the mercury hardly ever drops below 14 degrees in winter. On average it is a few degrees warmer.

The period from January to April is so wet that we would not be so quick to recommend a trip to the Comoros. If you want to travel to the Comoros during the winter sun season, November is actually the only good option. The best time to travel for a holiday in the Comoros is from August to November. This is the drier season when the sun regularly shines on the unspoilt beaches of the Comoros. Rain remains possible in this season. This is often limited to a few rain or thunderstorms, which mainly occur at the end of the day.

The hurricane

The Comoros is located in a zone where hurricanes can occur. These severe tropical storms, also known as cyclones, can form between November and mid-May. If the islands of the Comoros are hit by a hurricane, it can bring huge amounts of rain and high winds. It is not an annual phenomenon, but you have to take into account that there is a chance that you will be directly or indirectly affected by a hurricane. Because these deep depressions can be predicted a few days in advance, measures can be taken in time if necessary.
