History of Brooklyn, Wisconsin

Brooklyn, Wisconsin is a small town located in the south-central region of the state, just east of Madison within Dane County. Founded in 1848 by early settlers from New York, the town was named after its founders’ hometown of Brooklyn, New York. Originally founded as a farming community, Brooklyn has since grown into a residential area with a population of over 3,000 people.

The first settlers to arrive in Brooklyn were Joseph and Mary Johnson who settled in the area in 1848 when it was still part of the Town of Dunn. The Johnsons were soon followed by other families from New York including William and Elizabeth Treadwell, Thomas and Margaret Brodhead, and John and Mary Gilbertson. The earliest settlers were farmers who grew wheat, corn and potatoes as well as raising cattle for dairy products.

In 1851 the Town of Brooklyn was officially established with William Treadwell being elected as its first chairman. During this time period several businesses began to open up including hotels, general stores, blacksmiths shops and sawmills which provided employment opportunities for the local residents.
