History of Alamance, North Carolina

Alamance County is located in North Carolina’s Piedmont region and was formed from Orange County in 1849. The county was named after the Great Alamance Creek which runs through the area and is derived from an Indian word meaning “the junction of two rivers”.

The region has a long history of settlement by Native Americans, including the Siouan-speaking Catawba, Cherokee, and Tuscarora tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area around 1740 and established farms, churches, and schools. The town of Graham was established in 1849 as the county seat.

During the Civil War, Alamance County was divided between Confederate sympathizers and Union supporters. In May of 1863, Confederate troops under General William Tecumseh Sherman fought against Union troops led by General Joseph Hooker at what would become known as the Battle of Haw River or “The Battle Above the Clouds”. The battle ended with a Union victory but both sides suffered heavy losses.

In 1872, Graham became connected to other parts of North Carolina by railroad when it became a stop on the North Carolina Railroad line running from Goldsboro to Charlotte. This brought increased economic opportunities to Alamance County as goods could now be shipped more easily to other parts of the state and beyond.

In 1880s, cotton mills began to be built in Alamance County as part of an effort to industrialize the area. These mills were largely owned by wealthy families from outside North Carolina who profited greatly from their operations while providing relatively low wages for local workers. This led to an increase in poverty among many residents as well as labor disputes between mill owners and workers over wages and working conditions throughout much of the early 20th century.

Since then Alamance County has grown steadily with new businesses being established throughout its towns such as Burlington, Graham, Mebane and Elon College (now Elon University). Today, Alamance is home to many small businesses that provide jobs for local residents while its agricultural sector continues to thrive with tobacco being one of its main crops. It also remains a popular tourist destination due its proximity to both Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Greensboro-High Point International Airport which make it easy for visitors to access all that Alamance has to offer including its historic sites such as Cedarock Park which offers camping facilities as well as trails for hiking or horseback riding through its scenic wood.
